Your goal.
A coach is not a therapist or psychologist, or a personal trainer. A therapist or psychologist focus more on the past and the present and helps you process difficult experiences and trauma, they help you understand your emotions and (depending other qualifications) they can treat mental illness, help you through depression etc. A coach is not trained in this. They help you become aware of, and explore, your thoughts and behavior in the present, and guiding you through changing these towards the future you want. With goal settings and action plans.

A coach is also not someone that have all the answers and tell you what to do. A good coach is someone that puts you in the driver’s seat, that supports you, and helps you figure out what should be on top of your list of priorities, and to find your motivation to reach your goal and highest potential.
There are different kind of coaches you can work with, depending on what area you feel needs more attention. It’s the business coach that work with you to develop your business, there is the life coach that will help you when your life is messy and unstructured, the health coach that supports you towards a healthier, stronger and more energised everyday life, and there are coaches that guides you through your spiritual journey etc.

In my role as a coach I focus on your health journey, and the first question is always -what is health for you? I’ll help you figure out what health and wellbeing means to you, and together we discover how your healthy lifestyle will look like, how your life can be adjusted and changed in a way that works for you, in the longterm. Step by step we work through your current health situation and lifestyle, and identify your main objectives and goals with the coaching sessions. Then we create an action plan. As your health coach I will be your guide through this journey, share knowledge, help you remember your motivation, keep your focus and to hold you accountable. And most importantly, integrate the new health habits and lifestyle changes for a lasting result.

”It’s the small habits. How you spend your mornings. To make a change that will last, it’s important to break it down into small parts, and move forward step by step.
When it come to health coaching, areas you might want help with can be either more specific, or it can be a more general feeling of wanting to have a healthier lifestyle. However, one thing to keep in mind is that many things are connected, so focus areas can therefore be one or several of these: stress, physical activity, food, sleep hygiene, or a general feeling of ”being stuck”.

Some of the questions we might explore during the sessions are

What does it mean to you, to live a healthy life?

What is your ideal outcome, your dream goal and your deepest desires? Small and big

What is your core values and how can your new goals and changes be aligned with these?

How much time do you have available to devote for this change, actual time, but also headspace and energy wise?

What obstacles do you see?

What are the fears that is holding you back?

What tools and resources do you already have access to?

So how do you know if coaching sessions is the right for you?
When you feel that you’re in need of a change but don’t know where to start, and you feel overwhelmed.
When you’re feeling stuck and need a ”kick in the butt”.
When you’re struggling with making the changes you want, how to create your new habits.
When you have a clear goal and can make the changes needed, but found it hard to stick to your new habits in the long run.
When you want to hold yourself more accountable.

You will never feel ready, just start. What is your first step?

Nature’s effect on our wellbeing

https://www.massagetherapylisbon.com/blog/natures-effect-on-our-wellbeing

https://www.massagetherapylisbon.com/blog/natures-effect-on-our-wellbeing#comments

anxiety

burnout

coaching

connectedness

exercises

forest

health

healthcare

mental health

nature

rest

stress

trees

wellbeing

If you are my client, or if you’ve been following me on instagram for a while, you already know my obsession with nature. In the pupa that the larva creates for the transformation, it doesn’t just slap on its wings so it’s ready to fly, instead the larva completely dissolves into goo before it rebuild itself to a full butterfly!

And lichens, they are some of my other favorite organisms, they’re not just some weird plant that grows on old trees or rocks. A lichen is actually two organisms, an algae and a fungi, that live in symbiosis with each other. That they also are an indicator of the air quality, they thrive in areas where the air is clean, just makes them cooler.

And then of course, we have mushrooms. They are neither plants nor animals, they constitute their own kingdom: the Fungi. Fungi is also one of the biggest organisms in the world. It’s the honey fungus that is the largest known specimen, it covers around 8,8km2, and is estimated to be about 2500years old. And then we have fact that they are more closely related to animals than to plants. Weird? Yes. Fascinating? Totally!

In my mind, nature can cure ’almost anything!’. Nature do have a big positiv impact on us, and more and more research shows just exactly how important it is for our health to be near, and to spend time in nature. Both for our physical health and for our psychological wellbeing. It doesn’t always have to be wild nature, urban nature and city parks also have a big effect. Green spaces and nature makes us more likely to be physically active, it makes us walk and bike more, it reduces mental distress, reduce stress, results in more positive emotions, and faster mental recovery. Urban nature also helps with reducing our exposure to air pollution, and it helps regulate the temperature in our cities (keeps the street cooler in the warm summer months e.g.).

Studies have shown that green spaces near schools promote cognitive development in children, and green views near children’s homes promote self-control behaviors. For adults living in neighborhoods with more green spaces shown better attentional functioning than those with less access to natural environments. Furthermore, studies have found that being exposed to natural environments improves working memory, cognitive flexibility and attentional control, while exposure to urban environments is linked to attention deficits. Being exposed to nature lowers cortisol, the hormone that is released during stress. It’s even possible to see the difference in people’s stress levels depending on if they have an office with trees or a park outside the windows, compared to the once with an office facing buildings, streets or parking lots.

Adults living in greener urban areas, or spending more times in nature, are associated with lower probabilities of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, asthma hospitalization. For children it also shows lower risks for example obesity and myopia.

More and more countries are acknowledging the benefits of being in nature, and healthcare providers are also prescribing time in nature for better health and wellbeing. Japan was one of the first countries prescribing nature, and has been recommending ’forest bathing’ since 1982.
In some Canadian provinces patients can get provided with a pass to access their national parks and marine conservation areas. And in England a large ’green’ project started in 2020, involving around 8000 people, with the result of an increase of happiness and life worthwhile, at the same time as levels of anxiety fell.

Building a relationship with nature is one of the key factors for its positive impact. Researchers use the term ‘connectedness’ to describe the ideal relationship. Connectedness refers to the way we relate to nature and how we experience it. How we build this relationship with nature varies of course from each and every one of us, and there are a number of different activities that can help nurture it. It can be anything from high endurance activity like running, climbing, and surfing, to strolling through the park, having a coffee under the tree, laying on the grass reading a book, or gardening. It can be noticing nature by listening intently to birdsong or touching the bark of trees. Noticing how the flowers smell or how the soil feels between our fingers. We also connect and build our relationship with nature while writing about it, or reflecting and sharing our favorite sun spot or nature walk.

To get started in building a relationship with nature, if it’s completely new to you, or if you’re rebuilding it after being away for some time, here are a few ways that can help you get started:

Senses: Noticing and actively engaging with nature, e.g. listening to birdsong, smelling wild flowers, or watching stream flowing by, or the breeze in the trees.

Emotion: Experiencing the joy and calm nature can bring, e.g. talking about, and reflecting on your feelings about nature.

Beauty: Simply taking time to appreciate nature’s beauty.

Meaning: Exploring and celebrating how nature brings meaning to life, e.g. exploring how nature appears in songs and stories, poems and art, or by celebrating the signs and cycles of nature.

Compassion: Taking actions that are good for nature, e.g. creating homes for nature, and making ethical product choices.

Every time we pause to appreciate the good things in nature, and just noticing a tree outside of your window or the flower that is cracking through the concrete, can make a difference in our wellbeing.

- - -

Further reading:
Spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature is associated with good health and wellbeing, Nature
‘Better than medication’: prescribing nature works, project shows, The Guardian
Health: What are green prescriptions and which countries offer them?, World Economic Forum
Nature: How connecting with nature benefits our mental health, Mental Health Foundation
Nurtured by nature, American Psychological Association:

When the new year calls for something soft

https://www.massagetherapylisbon.com/blog/when-the-new-year-calls-for-something-soft

https://www.massagetherapylisbon.com/blog/when-the-new-year-calls-for-something-soft#comments

coaching

community

creativity

goals

new year

rest

softness

stress

Today's Society

wellbeing

Already, we have entered a new year. Already, the light is returning and the days are slowly getting longer again. It is still the time of hibernation and contemplation, but I’m also starting to feel an excitement for this new year we have ahead of us. For this year my words came to me in a very easy flowing and intuitive way, and I scribbled it down on post-it, in-between whatever it was I was doing at the moment. I wrote:

Softness, community, and creativity. And the importance to find your tribe.

It feels quite often like this is the complete opposite to what is happening in the world right now. Hustle, greed and selfishness is taking more and more space, while caring, empathy and community have to stand back. And I think it is time for a shift in our values and what we find important. I think it is time we take back what it means to be human.

So, for this new year, I want softness. I want to be surrounded by cotton candy and a soft morning light. Walking slowly throughout the year with a calm feeling in my in my chest, guided by quiet vibrations that show me the way. I want to wake up slowly with the sun, and the birds, and with the inner calm and confidence that I’m on the right path.

For this new year, I want community. Community building, and real and meaningful connections. A tribe that supports, that offers, and that receives. I want a community where kindness and authenticity is key. Where we can be safe together, and find refuge. I want true relationships rather than isolation, because in the end it’s your tribe that will fill up your cup when you are feeling drained.

For this new year, I want creativity. I want to speak my truth and create my life. I want to express my inner worlds, show the universe what makes the bubbles pop under my skin and my heart to beat a little faster. The world becomes a dangerous place when we become silent.

So for this new year, I want softness. Very tight schedules to show that we are successful and moving forward in the world. This includes also what we expect from others, the expectations on communication and how fast one should answer messages, emails and phone calls etc. The constant input from outside, together with always be on the move, causes a lot of stress for our minds and our bodies. Long periods of stress and lack of rest effects us hugely, and can cause long-term damages that one will have to manage for many years.

Longterm (chronic) stress does not only come from busy work schedules, but also from dysfunctional families, abusive relationships, poverty, lack of resources to change your living situation etc. But when the world is spinning faster, our society is rushing forward, where there’s little to no time just to be, it’s even more important to make time for rest. To take the time to rest. Some symptoms of chronic stress is pain in your body like muscle tensions and headaches, insomnia but also fatigue, withdrawing from friends and social events, low energy, brain fog and problems remembering things, changed appetite (weight gain or weight loss), and difficulties in focusing. It can also show up as mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depression. Living with a high level of stress for a long time also increase the risk of hypertension, heart disease, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease etc.

To recover from chronic stress and burnout can take several months and even years. Some people witness that they never fully recover, and have to change their routines and daily habits in order to manage their lives. However, humans are pretty amazing, and with regular rest and space in our schedule we can recover. How to find stress relive varies a lot from person to person, and the biggest and most important thing you can do for yourself is to give yourself time to feel what you actually need at that moment. Some things that are usually recommended for stress relive and stress management is:

deep breathing, meditation or yoga

connecting with people who boost your mood

doing hobbies that bring you joy

exercising

eating healthy food

laughing

listening to music

reading

spending time in nature

cancelling all appointments and events that are not absolutely necessary

If you’re not used to resting a lot, to give yourself time and space to not do anything, and to be bored, it can often feel stressful (the very much opposite of what the purpose is, right), because we’re so used to the idea that our worth and our purpose in life is completely entangled with being productive, making things happen, and just being busy (sometimes even without knowing really what the business is all about, as long as you’re doing something). It can be hard to change this feeling, but then even more important to do so. So to get into a good routine of resting, it can be easier to divide rest into different categories, and start with experimenting with one or two in the beginning. Often rest can be divided into these different types:

Physical rest; it can be both active and passive, where passive rest is getting enough sleep, extra nap during the day, and active rest can look like gentle yoga, stretching your body, going for a slow walk etc. Harder training like strength or running becomes an extra stress for the body.

Mental rest; organize your thoughts by making to do lists, checklists, and a weekly planning, create shutdown routine between work and personal life, take enough breaks during the day, meditate.

Social rest; evaluate your relationships, spend more time with high energy people and spend less time with people that drain your energy. Make sure to take some time to be alone.

Spiritual rest; create routines and ceremonies that is aligned with yourself, find a purpose-driven job or hobby, volunteer.

Sensory rest; take a break from social media, turn off notifications, limit video calls, listen to calm music etc.

Emotional rest; spend time with people you can be real with, try speaking with a therapist, find situations and environments where you feel emotionally safe.

Creative rest; watch sunrise/sunset, take a walk in nature, visit museums or art galleries, read books, listen to music, watch inspiring documentaries etc.

What kind of rest are you in need of today, rest for your body, rest for your mind?

An Introduction to Trauma Tapping Technique and Peaceful Heart Network

https://www.massagetherapylisbon.com/blog/an-introduction-to-trauma-tapping-technique-and-peaceful-heart-network

https://www.massagetherapylisbon.com/blog/an-introduction-to-trauma-tapping-technique-and-peaceful-heart-network#comments

anxiety

mental health

stress

trauma

trauma tapping

wellbeing

Trauma Tapping Technique (TTT) is a technique to cope with trauma, anxiety and stress. He started a more systematic research and created a system combining tapping acupoints with muscle testing to treat emotional stress, phobias and other symptoms. He called the treatment Thought Field Therapy (TFT). Later, one of Dr Callahans students, Gary Craig, simplified TFT to make it more accessible. Gary Craig’s version is called Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), and since then more than 30 different versions of tapping have been named.

When Gunilla Hamne started to work with TFT, she found that the muscle testing was hard to teach and the eye movement procedure that was a part of the technique, were considered weird and uncomfortable for many. This led to the changes to simplify the technique in a way so it would be more approachable and easier to adopt. With this new version called Trauma Tapping Technique, the results came out very positive and the method was practical to use, teach and multiply.

How does it work?
The parts of the body that is tapped on, 14 specific points on the upper body, are the same used in other psycho-sensory treatments such as TFT and EFT, and they correlate with points used in traditional Chinese medicine which dates back over 5 000 years in treatments like acupuncture, acupressure and shiatsu.

Any touch on the skin creates sensory input and generates electrochemical signals in the body that will be registered by the brain, activating the autonomous nervous system, triggering responses and production of hormones and neurochemicals. Some points of the body are more sensitive and register more information than others.

About Peaceful Heart Network
Trauma Tapping Technique is developed by The Peaceful Heart Network, a non-profit organization founded by Gunilla Hamne and Ulf Sandström in 2010. They are offering practical First Aid tools to resolve psychological trauma that anybody can learn. One of their pillars are that they are guided by the conviction that social and political stability depends on resolving trauma within as many people as possible in an affected community. They developed the TTT, a simplified tapping modality without language or content, and they offer training, mentoring, materials, support to start local projects and certification. It is estimated that TTT has reached more than 250,000 people in over 40 countries. Peaceful Heart Network is involved in humanitarian projects in for example Rwanda, DR Congo, South Sudan and other parts of Africa, as well as in India, Europe the United States and Canada. They received the ACEP Humanitarian Award in 2017 for this work.

Visit their website for more information, links to more article and research, video clips, their free app and to download the book Trauma Tapping Technique - A Tool for PTSD, Stress Relief, and Emotional Trauma Recovery (also available as audiobook and on Spotify).

One of Peaceful Heart Network’s main principles are:
Learn TTT and find calm - pass it on and share.

How did I learn about it?
My first encounter with Trauma Tapping was almost 15 years ago, I was working at a Center for Sustainable Development at Uppsala University, and Gunilla Hamne was invited to give a talk and a workshop about TTT. I had never heard of any typ tapping or similar sensory treatment before, but as always I was curious. After this first experience with TTT, it has been in the back of my mind of something to explore more. But it wasn’t until last year I decided to take the step to actually dig in to it, read books, articles, participate in the workshop and finally getting a certification so I now also can share it with others.

About the sessions with me
A session is usually done sitting, facing each other like two passing ships. Eyes can be open or closed depending on how you feel. I will then tap, using two fingers, on specific points on your body; on the hand, face, chest, under the arm and on the fingers. This is done two rounds while you’re thinking ever so lightly on the difficult emotion you’re feeling.

Before and after the session I might ask you to rate the level of distress you are feeling, and if any other thoughts or reflections comes up. The reason I started to get curious about this subject is because of the last couple of year I have noticed a lot of changes in my body. It started with night sweats, muscle loss, difficulties recovering from training sessions, followed by unexplained weight gain (I have been training and eating more or less in the same way for 20 years, it didn’t make sense to me at all). On top of that, sleeping problems, worsening PMS, increased anxiety, sadness and low mood.

I started to not recognize myself at all, it was like I was a completely different person. After some intensive search the answers that showed up over and over again was lists of perimenopausal symptoms. And my mind kind of exploded a bit. Could I be in perimenopause? Wasn’t that only for old people? I mean, I was only 39 when I started to have the first symptoms.

Here I had to take a little break and breathe for a while, all this information made me a bit overwhelmed. When I was ready to dig in again, my research was a bit more organized and I started to understand the different terminology and the definition of all these new words that came up. So here is some of what I learned:

Menopause is when you’ve not had your period for one year. It’s a specific time and can be marked in your calendar on the day. The average age for this to happen is 51-52 year.

Perimenopause however, is something completely different. It’s the time before menopause when your sex hormones are starting to fluctuate and drop more and more. A few women will not have any symptoms at all, until one day they just stop having their period. For most women the truth is that they will notice some difference in their bodies and experience a number of different symptoms. How long this period goes on for varies a lot from person to person, it can be anything from a few months for some women, and up to ten years for others. The average age for when most women starting to experiencing perimenopausal symptoms is around 45, but it’s not uncommon that it for women starts already in their early 40s.

As I mentioned earlier in the text, there’s a long list of symptoms that comes with this. Some of the more common and known ones are:
Hot flushes, night sweats, sleeping problems, vaginal dryness and irregular periods.

Other symptoms that are not spoken about so much, and were new at least to me are:
Brain fog, mood swings, tiredness, muscle loss, weight gain (especially around the belly), dry eyes and mouth, low libido, joint pain, migraine, tinnitus, dry skin, loss of hair, palpitations, UTIs, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem. And more.

One other thing I also realized was that I was far from the only one in my 40s who didn’t know what was going on with their bodies. In a Swedish study from 2021 it was clear that 1/3 of the women in the age 50-59 was completely unprepared for menopause. And 60% of these women said that they had had moderate or severe problems related to menopause.

This is quite a list, and I know it can feel overwhelming and difficult to take in, but there is help to get, and there are things one can do to ease the symptoms. It can be to adjust the amount of training, the change the type of training you’re doing, adjust the time you take for rest and recovering, change in food, nutrition and supplements, and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

After I started to understand what was going on with my body, I also realized that I’ve had several clients over the years that described these kinds of symptoms to me, and asking for advise. At the time nor me nor my clients connected the dots that it could be related to perimenopause.

Now I know better, and now after I recently earned a certificate to become a ”Strong Through Menopause”-coach (Swe: Stark Genom Klimakteriet-coach) I also have new tools to help others in their journey through perimenopause.

This is a first touch on the matter, and there will for sure be many more posts about this with more details on how to managed, what to expect and what to do. One of the most important things one can do though, is to stay curious, read and find information.
